Scientists share innovative applications of data-driven research

On 28 February 2013 scientists and academics share innovative applications of data-driven research. At the SURF Research and Innovation Event 2013 researchers present practical examples of their own research by applying ICT in an innovative and creative way. An overall trend is emerging throughout the programme: the present-day data delegue offers big opportunities for research. The programme consists of 16 sessions and two outstanding keynote speakers. Registration for SURF Research and Innovation Event 2013 is now open.

ICT Personality of the Year
One of the keynote speakers is Arnold Smeulders (COMMIT/UvA), co-author of the Dutch ICT Roadmap.  Prof. Smeulders recently received the annual Dutch ICT Personality of the Year Award for his prominent role in ICT research in the Netherlands. The programme consists of four tracks that give researchers  and those supporting them insight into the possibilities offered by ICT for data-intensive and multidisciplinary research.

New types of discovery
The programme of SURF Research and Innovation Event 2013 is subdived in four tracks:

  • Big Data & eScience
  • Collaboration & Polydisciplinarity
  • Making Connections
  • Citizen Science & Social Media

Science and scholarship can undertake new types of discovery by managing and exploiting Big Data. ICT enables researchers to identify previously unknown links, trends and patterns. Modern data-intensive science is characterised by teams of researchers, from disparate domains. They work together in multi-site collaborations and combine their knowledge, data and resources to make breakthroughs at the interface of scientific disciplines.

Not just academics but also commercial organisations increasingly recognise the research opportunities provided by analysing the communication taking place on social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook. Striking practical examples of these opportunities of data-driven research will be presented by scientists and academics at the SURF Research and Innovation Event 2013.

Organisation
The SURF Research and Innovation Event 2013 (SRIE13) is organised by SURF, SURFnet, SURFsara  and the Netherlands eScience Center (NLeSC). SURF and its operating divisions ensure that researchers can make use of smart ICT applications and receive the necessary support, leaving them more time for the actual research.
